LINX connection problems
by Admin User - Tuesday, 15 March 2011, 09:07 AM

The Network Operations Centre at our UK data centre reported late last night that LINX - The London INternet eXchange, which is the main peering point for ISPs in the UK - was suffering problems.  So they took the decision to re-route all traffic to avoid LINX until they have resolved their problems.

This initial problem and the re-routing required to bypass it may have caused a slow down on network performance for sites hosted on our UK-based servers until the re-routing was complete.  As of 09:00 this morning, we can see that LINX performance seems to have returned to normal.  The data centre will re-route back to LINX once they are happy that LINX is now stable again.

Christmas opening times
by Admin User - Monday, 20 December 2010, 10:48 AM

The pteppic.net office will be closing at 3PM on Thursday December 23rd. It will re-open at 10:00 on Tuesday 28th December. It will close again at 13:00 on Friday December 31st and reopen as normal at 09:00 on Monday January 3rd.

Please note that while the office is shut, over the Christmas and New Year break, our hosting servers will still be monitored and our helpdesk will be regularly checked for any issues, but response times will be slower than at normal times.

LINX causes network packet loss and performance degradation on many sites
by Admin User - Tuesday, 14 December 2010, 06:16 PM

Yesterday (13th December) and this morning (14th December) a number of our clients experienced either very slow performance or a total inability to reach their moodle sites. It was intermittent and sporadic - Some of our users had no problems while other users on the same sites could not even log on.

This was caused by a problem at LINX, (London INternet eXchange) - the main peering point for ISPs in the UK.

This caused connectivity problems for users in various parts of the UK, but not everyone, as some ISPs could re-route connections.

This was a problem entirely outside of our, or any other organisations control. From what we can see, the problem at LINX was cleared up some time around 11:00 this morning, after which performance returned to normal.
